my submission is a bashable resilient vessel - Leaf under Duress
Location 1158 Queen St E at Jones, Toronto. Leslie Grove Gallery
Through imagery and narrative, two fibre artists, Sheila Thompson and Beverly Allen, share their perspectives on a familiar plant structure, leaves. We present leaves of Ontario’s trees in diverse and unexpected ways to reveal some of their superpowers, vulnerabilities, and connections between the vitality of leaves and human activities. Sheila’s multicoloured, large felt leaves present extreme future responses to human-induced changes in habitat and climate. Beverly's depictions of leaves encourage close study of the leaves, highlighting the layers of colour and detail beneath their surface.
Activities: Artists will be available both weekends for tours and talks as well as construction of an indoors leaf based landart installation.

Ninety-four year old Sybil Rampen is a cornerstone in the Canadian fibre art world, ensuring there is recognition of contemporary fibre art in this country. A humble, yet talented artist in her own right, Sybil has encouraged and inspired emerging artists with her generous spirit and her experimental approach to artmaking. She has built a thriving art centre, The Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre, on the beautiful nature-filled grounds of her ancestral home in Oakville, Ontario. Sybil’s vision, determination, generosity, experimentation and dedication to fibre art, combined with her exceptionally positive outlook provides the recipe for Sybil’s full and successful life.
Connections Fibre Artists feel fortunate to have known, and worked with Sybil. Sybil is an exhibition of contemporary fibre art focussing on Sybil Rampen’s life. Participating artists have chosen some aspect of Sybil they admire, are grateful for, are inspired by, or identify with in some way.

My handmade felt submission is called "Stops on the Journey to Canada" - an impressionistic landscape coast to coast of symbolic stops by rail and road. The story line is taken from an old 1940s Canadian Pacific railway map my grandmother used on her journey here from England. Each stop in the piece contains a transparency of part of the map tucked into the resist holes.
